About
the Play:
Winner of the 2012 Obie Award for Best
New American Play and Finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
4000 Miles is a full-length dramatic comedy by Amy
Herzog. The Off-Broadway hit about a 21-year-old who shows up
without invitation at his feisty 91-year-old grandmother's West
Village apartment. What begins as an overnight visit turns into a
weeks-long stay as the two unlikely roommates ultimately reach each
other and carefully learn how to love each other.
4000 Miles is an inter-generational comedy about finding
peace, love and understanding. After suffering a major loss while he
was on a cross-country bike trip, 21 year-old Leo seeks solace from
his feisty 91 year-old grandmother Vera in her West Village
apartment. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely
roommates infuriate, bewilder, and carefully learn how to love each
other. 4000 Miles looks at how two outsiders find their way in
today's world. Known for delicately detailed character studies that
subtly balance humour and insight, Amy Herzog has crafted a
quiet rumination on mortality populated with beautifully drawn
characters you'll fall in love with.
4000 Miles premiered in 2011
Off-Broadway by Lincoln Center's emerging-artist arm, LCT3,
subsequently winning the 2012 New York Times Outstanding Playwright
Award, the 2012 Obie Award for Best New American Play, and was a
finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Time Magazine
called 4000 Miles, "the best play of the season –
hands down."

touching and fine as Amy Herzog's 4000 Miles
come along once or maybe twice a season, if we're lucky… This is
the rare theatrical production that achieves perfection on its own
terms." — New York Times

deserves to be a hit." — The New York Post
"In 4000 Miles
a warm-hearted new play by Amy Herzog, both
love and irritability are woven into an illumination of the healing
process after the loss of a loved one. The sensitive play [is] filled

grandmother and her grandson." — Associated Press
"Amy Herzog's
appealing new play, unfolds with the unassuming ease of conversations
overheard, among people with complicated relationships." —
