About the Play:

Acting: The First Six Lessons is a full-length dramatic comedy by Beau Bridges and Emily Bridges, adapted from the book with the same name by Richard Boleslavsky. The classic text has been the acting bible of the prolific Bridges family. Famed TV-film actor Lloyd Bridges gave each of his children a copy when they decided to go into show business. Eldest son, Beau Bridges, passed it on to his daughter, Emily Bridges, and together these second and third generation members of one of America's most beloved families of actors have adapted the Boleslavsky story of a mature instructor and his young eager student devoted to their craft for performance on the stage.

Acting: The First Six Lessons is a stage version of the 1933 narrative by Richard Boleslavsky about a dedicated acting teacher who, while instructing a young actress in her craft, gives her valuable lessons for living as well. Written in 1933, the iconic handbook gained the understated admiration of the knights of the British Theatre, however; it also caught on among the budding "method actors" in America. is based on a classic text on the art and craft of the thespian. Boleslavsky's "Lessons" on the great building blocks of great performances number only six – Concentration, Sense Memory, Dramatic Action, Characterization, Observation and Rhythm – and take place as a series of dialogues between a wise, experienced acting teacher and a pretty but raw young actress at the start of her career, possessed at the beginning of things with more enthusiasm than skill. Over the course of ten scenes, the action moves from the teacher's studio to a small theatre to a film set to Central park and back, and finally, to a moving denouement atop the Empire State Building in 1936. By the end of Boleslavsky's narrative, she has taken possession of her true gifts, in command of her craft and poised to succeed in acting and in life.

Acting: The First Six Lessons premiered in 2010 at Theatre West in Los Angeles and went on a national tour of colleges and universities to expose students to its "Lessons" and philosophy of life. Since then the play has been mounted by high schools, colleges, and community theatres.
