About the Play:
Alice in Concert is a full-length musical by Elizabeth Swados. An entertaining and shrewdly conceived retelling of the Carroll classic with all of the beloved characters – from the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat to the Queen of Hearts.
Alice in Concert is an imaginative rendering of the Lewis Carroll classic. It is performed concert-style on a bare stage, the actors in modern rehearsal clothes. Stylistically, the music ranges from rock to country/western to calypso, as the outlandish characters of "Wonderland" are reinterpreted in this "story theatre"-type setting.
Alice in Concert premiered in 1980 at The Public Theater during Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival. Meryl Streep starred as "Alice" and won an Obie Award.
Cast: 6 female, 6 male, with 7 piece musical accompaniment
What people say:
"Ms. Swados' new dramatized cantata ... made me think of Carroll very deeply ... [She] magnificently catches most of Carroll's divine nuttiness." — The New York Post
