About
the Play:
Finalist for the 2016 Governor
General's Literary Award for Drama (Canadian equivalent of the
Pulitzer Prize)
A Man A Fish is a full-length drama by Donna-Michelle
St. Bernard. A tale of lust, money and environmental sabotage.
Prosper, a fisherman, is targeted by an unethical eel salesman and
his fortunes take a turn for the worse. Meanwhile, the local
bartender has his eyes set on the fisherman's wife.
A Man A Fish involves a fisherman's dwindling catch, an
unscrupulous eel salesman and his wife who is desired by a bartender.
Prosper is a fisherman trying to get by in the face of everyday
problems: there's the spectre of the baby his wife desires, the ghost
of his dead mistress, his wife's secret admirer, and the overwhelming
lure of the village bar. When a slippery eel salesman arrives in town
peddling progress to the rural community, Prosper's list of problems
only increases. Faced with an invasive new species in his lake, his
fortunes decline along with the fish population, and Prosper gets a
lesson in gift horses and generosity. A haunting, powerful story, A
Man A Fish is inspired by events in Burundi.
A
Man A Fish premiered in 2013 at Persephone
Theatre in Saskatoon.
