About
the Play:
And Baby Makes Seven has
long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female Monologues,
Female/Female Scenes, and Female/Male Scenes.
And Baby Makes Seven is a full-length comedic drama by
Paula Vogel. With the help of their good friend Peter, Anna
and Ruth can have a baby and start the family they've always dreamed
of... but what does this mean for their three imaginary children? An
outrageous dark comedy, And Baby Makes Seven gives a fresh
outlook on what being a 'family' really means.
And Baby Makes Seven follows three characters as they wait
for the birth of their child. Anna and Ruth, a lesbian couple, are
preparing to co-parent with Peter, their more uptight gay male friend
and the biological father of the naturally conceived baby. Hugely
pregnant, Anna is ready to pop at any moment; but are any of them
ready for parenthood? Tensions rise as the three adults prepare for
the imminent arrival of their baby – and matters are made all the
more challenging by the persistence of Anna and Ruth's three
imaginary children – brainy Cecil, mischievous Henri and feral
Orphan – that they have invented to keep them company. The lines
between fantasy and reality, child and adult, love and madness
crisscross through this hysterically funny and deeply touching play
about what it means to be a family.
And Baby Makes Seven opened in 1984 at Eighteenth Street
Playhouse in New York City, directed by Paula Vogel. It was
then produced in 1986 at Theatre Rhinoceros in San Francisco and
premiered Off-Broadway in 1993, produced by the famed Circle
Repertory Company at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The
play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and
workshops and has been performed in regional and college theatre
productions.
