About
the Play:
And Then There Were None is a full-length mystery comedy by
Agatha Christie. This mystery masterpiece centers on the tale
of ten strangers who are called to the isolated mansion of a
mysterious gentleman. One by one they are murdered in accordance with
the lines of a sinister nursery rhyme. But whodunit? And will there
be anyone left at the end? The excitement never lets up in this ideal
play for schools, colleges and community theatres.
And Then There Were None is a superlative thriller. Ten
strangers who have never met each other, or their apparently absent
host and hostess, are lured to a stylish party at a lovely estate on
Soldier Island off the coast of Devon in the 1940's. When a terrible
storm cuts them off from the mainland, and with their hosts
mysteriously absent, the true reason for their presence on the island
becomes horribly clear, as secrets from their past come back to haunt
each and every one of them. A mysterious voice accuses each of a
specific crime committed in the past, offences that are impossible to
prove or somehow beyond the law's reach. After this unsettling
episode, the accused begin to die, one by one. Their causes of death
eerily follow the pattern of the children's rhyme "Ten Little
Soldiers," which counts down from ten to "none." No
one knows who to trust. Alliances are made and broken, and with no
way off the uninhabited island, safety is a dangerous illusion. Based
on the best-selling thriller of all time, with over 100 million
copies sold worldwide, Agatha Christie's own stage adaptation
of this dark and captivating tale will keep audiences guessing until
the final curtain.
Agatha Christie's adaptation of her novel And
Then There Were None was her first successful play. It
premiered in 1943 at St James' Theatre in London and opened on
Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City in 1944. Agatha
Christie claimed this play to be her best piece of craftsmanship.
It's still enormously
popular, and has become a popular choice for school and community
theatre productions.

endures with a no-nonsense plot
– straightforward and entertaining in a subdued British way."

gory – Christie, a nurse, was a poisons expert – but her dialogue
was often nothing short of hysterical." — Broadway
