About the Play:
Angry Housewives is a full-length musical comedy by creator and author A.M. Collins and composer-lyricist Chad
Henry. An edgy comedy about
a quartet of frustrated suburban women
who decide to break loose from the chains that restrain them, form a
punk rock band, and compete for a modest but much-wanted cash prize at
the local hard rock hangout.
Bored with their everyday lives and kept in insignificance by
their boyfriends/husbands, these are four angry women. They try a
number of outlets, but nothing suits until one of them strikes a
chord on her guitar and suggests that they form a punk rock group to
enter the upcoming talent show at the neighbourhood punk club? Their
group "The Angry Housewives," enter and win. This genial
satire of contemporary feminism ran for ages and lays claim to the longest sold out run of a musical in Seattle history.
Angry Housewives premiered in 1983 at the Pioneer Square
Theatre in Seattle, Washington for what was planned to be a five-week
run, but strong reviews and sold-out houses prompted an extension.
Several more followed and the show ran through most of the 1980s. An Off-Broadway production opened in 1986 and ran for 136 performances at the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York
City. It has been seen in London and has had a healthy run in regional
theatre, including most major cities in America.
