About
the Play:
Anne Frank & Me is a full-length comedic drama by
Cherie Bennett. Nicole
Burns, a modern day teen Holocaust denier, is thrown back in time to
Paris, France during World War II. As the Nazi's invade France,
Nicole is forced into hiding. While struggling for life, she comes
face to face with Anne Frank. Nicole comes to respect and admire
those who fought for their life.
Anne Frank & Me is a multiple national award-winning
new American classic that directly
confronts the ignorance of many young people about the Holocaust.
"What difference does it make?" one of its teen-age
characters asks. "It's ancient history." High School
student Nicole Burns doubts the truth and cares even less, but
ultimately comes face-to-face with the hell of the Holocaust, and –
in an extraordinary sequence – meets Anne Frank on a cattle car to
Auschwitz. Anne Frank & Me begins with Nicole in today's
teen world of hip-hop dancing, unfinished homework assignments, and
young love. Along with Nicole, the audience is then transported back
in time to Nazi-occupied Paris, a work camp in Auschwitz and then
brought forward again to the light and hope of the present.
Anne Frank & Me premiered
in 1995 by the Shalom Theatre at the Gordon Jewish Community Center
in Nashville, Tennessee. It opened Off-Broadway in 1996 at the
American Jewish Theatre (AJT) and received rave reviews from The
New York Times. Since
then the play had regional premieres at professional theatres across
the US and has been mounted by middle
schools, high
schools, colleges, and community theatres.
