About the Play:
Finalist for the 1997 Governor General's Award for Drama (Canadian
equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize)
Atlantis is a full-length drama by Maureen Hunter. A two-hander about a passionate encounter between a Canadian man and a
Greek woman, set on the Greek island of Santorini and told in a style
that is both tenderly erotic and ecstatically mystical.
Atlantis is about two people who are consumed by
unquenchable desire. Ben is a Canadian in his fifties who abandons
all he knows to lose himself on the sunny island of Santorini,
thought by many to be the very locale of legendary Atlantis. There he
meets Mircea, a Greek woman with mystical powers and the island's
personal saint. The two cast aside language and their ensuing love
affair outrages the tiny village – but heals their personal and
spiritual wounds.
Atlantis was first produced in 1996 by Manitoba Theatre
Centre and Theatre Calgary. Since
then the play has
been produced widely
at professional theatres across
Canada,
including the Belfry Theatre in Victoria, Edmonton, Kamloops, the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto, The Grand Theatre in London, and Vancouver.
