About
the Play:
At The Wedding is a full-length comedy by Bryna Turner.
Carlo crashes her ex-girlfriend's wedding to a man with three simple
goals: Don't get drunk. Don't make any kids cry. Don't try to win
back the bride, no matter how boring the groom is. (She'll ultimately
fail at all three.) At The Wedding is a very, very funny play
about loneliness, estrangement, and a slow-burn romance with being
alive.
At The Wedding follows the world's loneliest (and wittiest)
single woman, Carlo, as she crashes the wedding of her ex-girlfriend.
Her ex is marrying a man, and Carlo is going to be really well
behaved today. She's not going to get drunk. She's not going to give
any long-winded speeches. And she's definitely not going to try to
steal the bride back. Upon arriving at the wedding, she turns on her
charisma and charm and flirts her way through the party. From friends
to enemies to former lovers and even strangers, Carlo sees them all
and begins to wonder if heartbreak is really permanent. Through
humour and wit, you get an intimate look at the struggles of
rejection and self-acceptance. Carlo's story and feelings resonate
with people of all backgrounds, touching on the universal desire for
acceptance and love. The play is inspired by Dorothy Baker's
Cassandra at the Wedding.
At The Wedding premiered in 2022
at LCT3/Lincoln Center Theater Off-Broadway in New York City and was
a resounding success, garnering sold-out shows and an extended run.
It received the Blanche and
Irving Laurie Foundation's Theatre Visions Award, was a NY Times
Critic's Pick, and was featured in the NYT Best of 2022
“Unforgettable Theatrical Moments" category. Since then the
play had regional premieres at professional theatres across the US
and has been mounted by college theatres.

What people say:
"Whimsical... laughter
constantly flows, quite often outrageously so, through 70 lively
minutes." — New
York Stage Review
"Brutally hilarious!"
— TheaterMania
"Bitterly funny...
wisecracking and wisdom-sharing about the unbreakable bond between
love and pain... there's a fun time to be had at this wedding."
— New York Theatre Guide
"Fresh and trenchant... The
lines are funny; Turner has a boxer's sense of the two-punch rhythm
of jokes... Authorial patience is part of what makes At the
Wedding so fresh; though there are plenty of one-liners,
it is not a yuk-yuk comedy foisting its laughs at you or
over-signaling its intentions... Also revivifying is the way Turner
reshapes the wedding genre for our time, inviting new characters to
the party." — New
York Times
