About
the Play:
The Best Brothers is a full-length comedy by Daniel
MacIvor. Two brothers have lost their mother to a comically
gruesome accident at the Gay Pride Parade. As they come to grips with
their mother's untimely demise, the brothers must contend with
sibling rivalry and decades of buried resentment. The Best Brothers is a
bittersweet comedy, from one of Canada's most beloved playwrights,
that explores grief, acceptance, and love in unexpected places.
The Best Brothers is a heart-warming and hilarious
two-hander. Hamilton and Kyle Best are
two very different brothers. Hamilton
designs buildings, Kyle sells them. Hamilton, the older
brother, is a straight-laced architect with a
(seemingly) stable marriage and home and little apparent
appetite for adventure. Kyle is a free spirited real-estate agent who
moves frequently and his current
boyfriend is a "professional." The sudden death of their
mother Ardith "Bunny" Best – in a ludicrous accident
involving a drag queen, a loud speaker and a Gay Pride Parade –
brings the brothers together to sort out the details of arranging
her funeral and caring for her most beloved companion, a troublesome
Italian greyhound named Enzo. As they look to celebrate their mother,
their relationship is tested while they plan the funeral, and bicker
over her obituary, eulogy-giving, dog-sitting, Kyle's unfortunate
taste in men, and who Mom loved best – only to discover it may have
been her dog.
The Best Brothers premiered in 2012 at the Stratford Festival
to rave reviews and later went on to a successful run at Toronto's
Tarragon Theatre. The play
has been
performed in regional repertory, college, and community theatre
productions.
