About the Book:

Boydell's Shakespeare Prints is an impressive collection of engravings illustrating the dramatic works of William Shakespeare.

John Boydell and his nephew Josiah Boydell, leaders in the English school of engraving in the late 1700s, began a Shakespeare venture that included the establishment of a Shakespeare Gallery and the publication of an illustrated edition of Shakespeare's plays. Some of the most illustrious painters of the day contributed specially commissioned paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's plays, from which engravings were made. A monumental effort begun in 1787, the engravings of scenes from the dramatic works of William Shakespeare speak as passionately to the viewer today as they did more than 200 years ago.

Nearly 100 illustrations offer a new look at the long-neglected area of romantic early-19th-century art. Reproduced directly from rare original editions are depict dramatic scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Tempest, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, and 23 other plays.

An excellent source of royalty-free illustrations, this collection will appeal equally to lovers of fine art and literature
