About
the Play:
Broken Up is a full-length romantic comedy by Nick Hall.
The bittersweet realities of a married couple divorcing and her
moving into her own apartment and funny complications. Broken Up
is a fast moving, laughable look at the uncertainty one faces
following a divorce.
Broken Up is the story of a couple on the verge of divorce.
Meg Owens is divorcing her husband, Tom. Faced with living on her own
for the first time in years, Meg is in the middle of moving into an
apartment down the hall from her soon-to-be ex-husband. All she has
to do is have Tom sign the final papers and then she can start her
new life. However, signing the final papers becomes increasingly
difficult, as Meg struggles with being thrown back into the dating
world, represented in the persons of her the building's amorous
maintenance man and a blind date who also happens to be somewhat of a
know-it-all on the subject of divorce. Reminiscent of a Neil Simon
comedy, Broken Up is a slap-stick farce that proves, if
marriage is hell, divorce is hilarious.
Broken Up premiered in 1978 at The Barn Dinner Theater in
Atlanta, Georgia. The play has been performed in community theatre productions.
Cast: 1 female, 3 male
What people say:
"It's a hilarious look at a
divorce sort of like marriage, only backwards that didn't work ...
and the second act is nothing short of comedic excellence. Left in
Meg's newly rented apartment, the three guys engage in a drinking
contest that leaves all three and the audience, too on the floor. . .
. Some of the best one liners since Neil Simon was making his initial
Broadway splash.... Leaves 'em laughing." — Atlantic
Constitution
"A fast moving comedy with
excellent dialogue and rapid fire laughs." — Multi
County Star (Atlanta)
"Broken Up has
plenty of laughs sprinkled through its three acts." —
Sarasota Journal
