About the Play: Bull
in a China Shop is a full-length comedy by Bryna Turner.
Spanning 40 years in a New England women's college, Bull in a
China Shop is a modern spin on the true story of two women in
love who revolutionized education and helped birth the women's
equality movement in America during the early 20th Century.
Bull in a China Shop
depicts the lives, loves, and political and romantic struggles of
Mary Woolley, president of a New England women's college from 1901 to
1937, and her partner, Professor Jeannette Marks. The
title refers to Woolley's reputation as an activist who freely spoke
her mind. Galloping through forty years at Mount
Holyoke College, Bull in a China Shop follows Mary
Woolley and Jeannette Marks as they reform and revolutionize women's
education at the height of the suffrage movement. As evolving
ambitions fan-adoration, and the price of joining the establishment
strain the couple's relationship, this fast-paced feminist comedy with
whiplash dialogue asks: What is revolution? What
does it mean to be at odds with the world? How do we fulfill our
potential? How the hell – as Bryna Turner's character would
put it – do we grow old together?
Bull in a China Shop premiered in 2017 Off-Broadway at
LCT3/Lincoln Center Theater in New York City and was a resounding
success, garnering sold-out shows and an extended run. Since
then the play had regional premieres at professional theatres across
the US and has been mounted by college theatres.
