About
the Play:
Cold Meat Party is a full-length dramatic comedy by Brad
Fraser. A
mix of Canadian, American and British characters, with radically
dissimilar lifestyles, meet for the funeral of a mutual college
friend, and demonstrate their inability to cope with their empty
lives while satirizing contemporary mores in a series of one-liners.
Cold Meat Party is a
reflective look at mid-life crisis and its effects on the human
psyche.
Cold Meat Party concerns
a Canadian novelist's group of former friends converging on a
Manchester bed and breakfast for the funeral and reading of the will
of their recently deceased college friend. They include feminist
film-maker Nash and her daughter, fading glitter rock star Marcus and
his bisexual lover, homophobic rightwing politician Dean and his
enigmatic consort. This unlikely group gathers to remember past
friendships and the happy days of success but also to face the
uncertain and chaotic present. In the course of a busy, bed-hopping
weekend, the late novelist proves as potent an influence in death as
he was in life.
Cold Meat Party was
commissioned by and first performed in 2003 at the Royal Exchange
Theatre in Manchester, England. Its Canadian
premiere was in 2004 at The
Factory Theatre in Toronto, Ontario.
Cast: 3 female, 4 male
What people say:
"It's 'The Big Chill' with
attitude and better one-liners. But beneath the witty repartee
there's something deeper: the melancholy feeling that life has passed
far too quickly." — City Life
"Brad Fraser's
new play fizzles with life and vitality. A master of stiletto
dialogue, the verbal sparring from Fraser's characters ricochets like
an electrically charged pinball. Fraser's play weaves a multitude of
complex themes ranging from love, death, aging and sexual uncertainty
with a deftness that engages the audience with each of the
characters…." — Morning Star
"...the action moves at
jet-propelled speed ... and the dialogue is bright, sharp and funny."
— The Guardian
