About
the Play:
Finalist for the 2016 Governor General's Award for Drama (Canadian
equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize)
Concord Floral is a full-length drama by Jordan
Tannahill. A haunting tale set in a million square foot abandoned
greenhouse and hangout for neighbourhood kids, Concord Floral
re-imagines Giovanni Boccaccio's 13th century literary masterpiece
The Decameron in a contemporary suburban thriller, in which
ten teens flee a plague of their own making. Bravely conceived to
give young performers a platform for expression, Concord Floral
is about about beauty, cruelty, mercy, and the modern adolescent
experience.
Concord Floral is a million-square foot greenhouse.
Abandoned for years, it is seen as a scourge by concerned parents in
the nearby suburbs. But it is also a hangout and refuge for a group
of high schoolers; a place all to themselves in which to throw
parties, experiment, dream, dare, and come of age. But something has
happened there. Something nobody wants to talk about. As in
Boccaccio's original, in which ten youth flee to an abandoned villa
when the Black Death sweeps through medieval Florence, ten youth flee
to the abandoned greenhouse when a mysterious plague descends upon
their neighbourhood. But in Concord Floral, it is a plague
they have brought upon themselves. Inspired by the real-life
greenhouse located just above Highway 7 in Vaughan, Ontario
(demolished in 2012), and the ways in which adolescents reclaim
abandoned and unused spaces in their suburbs, Jordan Tannahill
has written a lyrical, choral-driven play for mature audiences
performed by ten teenagers.
Concord Floral was first produced in 2014 at Theatre Centre
in Toronto and subsequently toured across Canada. It won the 2015
Dora Award for Outstanding New Play, the 2015 Carol Bolt Award, and
was a Finalist for the 2016 Governor General's Award for Drama.
