About the Play:

Confusions is a full-length comedy by Alan Ayckbourn. This series of five interlinked but self-contained one-act plays by Britain's best-loved comic playwright typify his black comedies of human behaviour in recognizable and absurd domestic situations. The plays are alternately naturalistic, stylized and farcical, but underlying each is the problem of loneliness and characters who suffer the result of being ignored.

Confusions is a matchless quintet of interlinked plays that illustrates the hilarious consequences of not listening to one another. Each of the plays connects to the next through one of its characters until the final one is reached when four people sit alone on park benches. From high farce to poignant observation; the laughs, however dark, keep coming. Mother Figure shows a mother unable to escape from baby talk with adults. In Drinking Companion an ageing absentee husband clumsily attempts seduction without success. In Between Mouthfuls, an embarrassed waiter witnesses domestic break-ups on two separate tables. A garden party gets out of hand when a secret affair is announced over the loud speaker in Gosforth's Fête. The final play, A Talk In The Park, sums up, with a revue-style curtain call piece for the five self-immolated characters on park benches. Alan Ayckbourn's witty dialogue and penchant for farce are perfectly featured among his best writing and most colourful characters.

Confusions was first produced in 1974 at the Library Theatre in Scarborough and had its London premiere in 1976 at the Apollo Theatre. It has since become one of the most popular and studied plays of the last 40 years.

What people say:

"Buoyant ... sad, sharp and funny." — Guardian (London)

"Runs the gamut of comic technique from faintly pathetic situation comedy to outright farce.... Ayckbourn has demonstrated once again that even in a trivial situation he can hold the attention with his matchless ear for conversational speech, and in untrivial situations shows himself a comic writer of immortal quality." — Financial Times (London)
