About the Play:

Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra (the title was originally the same in both French and English, but was later retitled Manon, Sandra and the Virgin Mary) is a full-length drama by Michel Tremblay, translated by John Van Burek. Two people, each an outcast from so-called normal society, deliver alternating and occasionally concurrent monologues. Manon is a sour spinster and a religious fanatic; he is a narcissistic drag queen who calls himself Sandra and only lives for sex. Rather than just emphasize their differences, Michel Tremblay is equally intent on showing their similarities.

Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra is a poetic, provocative exploration of the sacred and the profane – their similarities and differences, how they can merge and become one another. The aggressively pious spinster Manon (from Forever Yours, Marie-Lou) and the outrageously worldly Sandra (from the plays Hosanna and Saint Carmen of the Main) are characters who played important but secondary roles in some of the earlier plays in the author's seminal play cycle. Now, united in their fascination with the Virgin Mary but having no further reason to exist, the author has them speak to the audience in parallel monologues in which their sacred and profane natures meet and cross over, as he liberates them from the confines of the worlds in which they lived. Originally titled Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra, this masterpiece of elegant simplicity and daring, explosive emotions was written by Michel Tremblay as the final instalment in his Belles-Soeurs cycle for the stage. At the play's climax Sandra and Manon realize that they have been "invented" by the author.

Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra had its English-language premiere in 1979 at The Arts Club in Vancouver. Its US premiere was in 1983 at the legendary La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club (La MaMa E.T.C.) off-off-Broadway in New York City. The play enjoyed widespread acceptance among leading regional theatres, and is regularly performed in college and fringe theatre productions.

What people say:

"If one can judge from the superb quality and blazing intensity of the emotional outpourings in Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra, then Michel Tremblay ought to perhaps reconsider his decision [to end this eleven-play cycle]. The playwright's purpose is to show there are two persons existing within a body. Good and evil, love and hate, religious and sexual ecstasies… so close as to be one and the same." — The Montréal Star

"A hauntingly powerful evening of theatre." — Vancouver Express
