About the Book:

HARD TO FIND BOOK, only a very limited number of copies are still available.

Donna Karan has proven with her remarkable success – and in her own personal style – that the American dream still exists. Refined, comfortable, simple, and sensual, her creations slipped effortlessly into the wardrobes of chic and modern New Yorkers long before cosmopolitan dressers in other capital cities caught up. Here, esteemed art, fashion and culture writer, Ingrid Sischy explores Karan's immeasurable impact on, and revolutionary role in, American fashion.

Donna Karan is one of the most prominent and successful figures in American fashion. Her superstar status derives from a philosophy of designing real clothes for real women – beautiful yet practical creations that are as easily worn in everyday life as on the catwalk. The simple shapes do not depend on a rail-thin mannikin shape, but flatter even the generously-proportioned. She is the archetypal New Yorker, drawing her inspiration from the energy, pace, and style of the world's most sophisticated city. Originating as a womenswear label, her company went on to produce menswear, childrenswear, and accessories, all perpetuating the uniquely modern style that first brought Donna Karan world recognition.

What people say:

"These four volumes continue the 'Universe of Fashion' series of 11 titles published since 1996. Each volume in the series is devoted to a notable fashion designer and follows a simple template: ten to 15 pages of biography, 50 pages or so of photographs illustrating the designer's work, a career chronology, and photographic credits accompanied by thumbnails of the larger photographs (a nice touch). The volumes resemble miniature exhibit catalogs, providing quick glimpses of the lives and work of people who have molded the fashion establishment during the last few decades." — Library Journal
