About the Play:
Finalist for the Saskatchewan
First Book Award
Dry Streak is a full-length comedy by Leeann Minogue.
It's hot. Burning hot. After months of unrelenting heat, dust and the endless complaints of everyone around her, city-girl-Kate has had enough of farm life. Too many drinks, and
she's yelling that, if it would just rain, she'd run down Main Street naked. Things get out of hand when the town newspaper man publicizes Kate's promise to bare all and the national media gets a hold of the story.
Dry Streak takes place
during the dry, hot summer of 1988. It
tells the story of Kate Allen as she moves with her boyfriend, John
Richards, to his parents, Olive and Peter Richards, very rural
Saskatchewan farm. A world travelled vegetarian who listens to punk
rock music, she is not exactly the kind of girl Peter Richards
thought his son would bring home – a flightly female city slicker.
Set in the Richards' cozy farm kitchen, Dry Streak
provides a glimpse into the life of a small prairie farming community
enduring the effects of an unprecedented heat wave and drought. As
the play progresses, the temperature goes up outside – and also
inside – as people's blood starts to boil and the tension builds.
Kate, tired of all the talk about the drought – and after having
one drink too many – makes a very public promise: if only the drought will break, she'll streak naked through the streets of the town. Now the media is
running the story, the
pronouncement rocks the community, and things get very interesting in
Stony Valley, Saskatchewan.
Dry Streak premiered in 2006 at the Persephone
Theatre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The
show has since been on stage at the Station Arts Centre in Rosthern,
Saskatchewan, the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, and
has enjoyed
many successful productions in more
than 25
rural communities. It
has become a popular choice for community theatre productions.

What people say:
"Minogue has created a
critic-proof play." — Saskatoon Star Phoenix
"Though the play is
uproariously funny, it also makes poignant points about families and
priorities and change and home, and viewers will leave simultaneously
thinking about these deeper issues and chuckling about their
favourite moments from the play. Dry Streak
represents a great achievement for the arts in Saskatchewan, and it
is well worth the time to visit Stony Valley. And make sure you pray
for rain." — The Sheaf
"If anyone is looking for a
combination of comedy and drama, then Dry Streak is the play
for them." — Lucknow Sentinel
(Ontario)
