About the Play:

The Elevator is a one-act thriller by Herb Gardner. The first published work of one of America's most beloved playwrights.

The Elevator was published when the author was a 16-year-old student. A sinister figure cuts a wire in an elevator which is about to descend. On the way down the elevator stops and there is no escape. Then a taunting voice calls out; we learn that the man above nearly went to the chair for a crime he didn't commit because one of the elevator occupants would not speak on his behalf (bad publicity). The selfishness of the occupants is exposed as the laughing man cuts the cables, stroke by stroke. The final stroke – and the doors open! The teaser had lowered them while taunting them!

The Elevator (originally titled The Condemned and credited to Herbert Gardner) premiered in 1952, the year the author graduated from New York's High School of Performing Arts.

Cast: 1 female, 5 male

About the Playwright:

Herb Gardner (1934-2003) was an American commercial artist, cartoonist, playwright and screenwriter. Born in Brooklyn, he was educated at the New York High School of the Performing Arts, the Carnegie Institute of Technology and Antioch College. He first came to public attention in the 1950s as the author of The Nebbishes, a nationally syndicated comic strip about social gadflies, which he retired in 1960 to concentrate on writing. Best known for his Broadway hits A Thousand Clowns, I'm Not Rappaport and Conversations With My Father, he wrote few plays but their undeniable humour and commercial appeal made him among the most produced playwrights worldwide.
