About the Play:
Encore is a full-length dramatic comedy by Marc
Prescott. A man walks into a
bar… he sees a beautiful woman sitting alone at a table and the
chase is on! Given just ten minutes to win her over, they engage in a
dialogue that will forever shape their lives. Encore is
sad, funny, hopelessly romantic and lovingly bittersweet comedy about a married couple who re-enact their first date every year in an attempt to rekindle the flame. Encore is
a two-hander that takes a
married couple back – again and again – to the instant they first
met in a hotel lounge. A symbolically nameless couple chart their 50-year
relationship by reenacting their first encounter on every
wedding anniversary. She has carefully written the script of their original
encounter and they believe they can recreate the intoxicating feeling
of falling in love by saying the same lines year after year but
always fall short of this goal and are doomed to disappointment. They
yearn to be seduced by the exact words of their original encounter
but time and circumstance have changed the meaning of these words.
Encore is essentially the same scene replayed six times but
paradoxically it is never quite the same – which ironically is the
message of the play. The romantic comedy's title is a metaphor that life is
indeed a stage.
Encore was originally written and performed in French in
2003 at Théâtre Cercle Molière in Winnipeg, the oldest theatre company in Canada, French or English. It was translated by the author and first performed in English
in 2008 by Theatre Projects in Winnipeg. Since then the play has
been successfully staged in both in French and in
his English translation at several professional theatres across
Canada, including the Montreal premiere in 2019 at the MainLine Theatre in a bilingual production.
