About the Book:

Designed for artists of all levels and experience, Exploring Modern Commedia provides a quick and informative guide for everything from form and technique to character and show development in a modern exploration of the traditional Italian theatre, Commedia dell'Arte. Contemporary improvisational theatre from Paul Sills' Second City to television's "Saturday Night Live" are all many descendants in a very long family tree from Commedia dell'Arte. This style of comedy began as street theatre in 16th century Italy, and is characterized by improvised text based on plot outlines.

Exploring Modern Commedia: A Step-By-Step Guide To Mask Work And Physical Theatre Development In Commedia Dell'arte is a fun and informative hands-on resource for performers wishing to explore modern commedia, mask technique, and character creation, based on methods developed through the personal research and practice of the author. The book is intended for readers at all levels of experience with the craft, and can be used as an introduction to physical theatre and mask work, as well as scene devising and show creation. Ali Landvatter outlines simple exercises that strengthen technique which build upon each other so the artist feels constantly challenged and can identify areas of growth and development in his or her own practice. Along with form and technique, she discusses Commedia dell'Arte and its relevancy in today's theatre world, from audience involvement to subject matter.
