About the Play:

Falling: A Wake is a full-length drama by Gary Kirkham. Based on a true story. Harold and Elsie live quietly on an isolated farm. When a commercial jetliner explodes high above their land scattering wreckage and debris across the region, their lives are forever changed. Particularly suitable for schools and play contests.

Falling: A Wake is a two-hander about love, loss, and the redemptive power of letting go. Harold and Elise live on an isolated farm. One starry night, a jet explodes six miles above, scattering debris over a 200 square mile area. The body of a young man, still strapped in his seat, lands in their yard. Over the course of the night, they make a home around the body, and in doing so the mysterious stranger effects a strange transformation in his rural hosts. Falling: A Wake is a haunting and at times surprisingly funny play inspired by the actual events surrounding the 1988 Pan Am tragedy over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Falling: A Wake premiered in 2007 at Lost & Found Theatre in Kitchener, Ontario. The play went on to have its United States premiere in 2008 at Stageworks in Hudson, New York. It has since been produced dozens of times in regional repertory, high school, college, and community theatre productions in Canada and the United States.

What people say:

"Falling: A Wake is a prayer for the departed, as well as a prayer to those who remain. It quietly, but insistently, searches out meaning in a world that often appears random, reminding us that, at some level, we are all lost souls in the dead of night waiting on the light." — The Kitchener-Waterloo Record

"The audience gave this play a standing ovation, and for good reason…the play touches the heart." — The Globe and Mail

"Falling: A Wake is a quirky love story that makes me go ahhhhhh." —

"…genuinely moving and bittersweetly humorous….." —
