About
the Play:
Fast Girls has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female/Female Scenes.
Fast Girls is a full-length romantic comedy by Diana
Amsterdam. It's the
mid-80s, and two single girls are neighbours in a chic Manhattan
building. The wild one loves men, freedom, and sex; the neurotic one
wants to be married. Fast Girls is a comedy about sex, love,
dating, relationships, mothers, boyfriends, and food.
Fast Girls is a precursor to the American rom-com classic
Sex and the City. This fast-paced comedy is also a buddy story
about two single women in the city, in the late eighties, when the
sexual revolution hit a definite snag. Lucy Lewis is a divorcee in
her 30s, who loves men, being single, and playing the field; she is a
successful career woman and a "fast girl." Her best friend
and neighbour Abigail McBride seeks a suitable husband and, in her
mid-thirties, is definitely desperate, declaring that she realized,
too late, that "high standards and loneliness are one and the
same thing." Lucy's mother Mitzi comes to town. Her goal: to
convince Lucy that she has GOT to settle down before it's too late,
and she sends over Lucy's ex-boyfriend Sidney to seal the deal. In
one of the funniest second acts in theatre history, Lucy pretends to
cook for Sidney and be a "good girl" to show him how
ridiculous it is; but the charade backfires. Meanwhile, her
boytoy-of-the-minute keeps turning up, never suspecting the hornet's
nest he is strolling into. Fast Girls is a proven
crowd-pleaser, single women in their twenties and thirties dramatically bond
with Lucy and Abigail; older audiences adore the character of the mother,
Mitzi – a riotous segment where Mitzi patiently tries to explain on the phone to her husband where certain domestic items are is just about worth the price of admission alone.
Fast Girls premiered in 1988 at Paul Sorvino's
American Stage Company in Teaneck, New Jersey. It has been
produced all over the world and translated into several languages. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and
is regularly performed in
regional, college, and community theatre productions..
