About the Play:

Forever Yours, Marie-Lou (English version of À toi, pour toujours, ta Marie-Lou) is a full-length drama by Michel Tremblay, translated John Van Burek and Bill Glassco. Leopold, Marie-Louise and their daughters Carmen and Manon are unable to communicate their frustration and longings, trapped in the web of the traditional family cell.

Forever Yours, Marie-Lou is a beloved Québécois classic that presents two fragmented stories; one of two sisters arguing about how to move on from tragedy, and one of their parents' painful argument set 10 years earlier and caused by something as small as burnt toast. Carmen returns home to convince Manon, her sister, to end ten years of mourning the death of their parents. Past and present intermingle as the two daughters struggle to reconcile their visions of of what happened the past, and we listen in on their parents, devout Christian Marie-Louise and her alcoholic husband Léopold, enact the events preceding their fatal car crash. Carmen finally chooses life singing in a Country and Western bar, leaving Manon to keep vigil for a troubled Québec family best left behind. Told in a form that is utterly unique, this brilliantly witty, imaginative and perceptive exploration of a chronically dysfunctional family is widely considered to be one of the masterpieces of Canadian drama.

À toi, pour toujours, ta Marie-Lou was first performed in French in 1971 at Théâtre de Quat'Sous in Montréal, Québec. Forever Yours, Marie-Lou was first produced in English in 1972 by Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. This edition, which played at the 1990 Stratford Festival, is John Van Burek and Bill Glassco's revised translation of Michel Tremblay's original French text.

Cast: 3 women, 1 man.

What people say:

"...one of Quebec playwright Michel Tremblay's greatest works... Forever Yours, Marie-Lou is easily as much an English-Canadian classic as it is a French-Canadian one." — Globe & Mail

"…perhaps the most emblematic of all Tremblay's plays. A tragedy, written in fierce dialogue, decrying loneliness, poverty, ignorance and fear of the unknown, it portrays a society at a crossroads, torn between apathetic self-pity and the lucidity that precedes a taking charge of one's destiny." — Voir (Montréal)

"In his brilliantly insightful, uncompromising drama Forever Yours, Mary-Lou, Michel Tremblay brings one family's awful past and haunted present together in mortal combat over a kitchen table." — The Detroit News

"Quebec writer Michel Tremblay's dark domestic drama is as lethal as broken glass." — Beacon Herald
