About
the Book:
A concise and practical guide
for aspiring and experienced
theatre directors,
from a leading practitioner in Canadian theatre. Fundamentals
of Directing is intended as a
useful road map of
directorial best practices for directors
in the professional world of Canadian theatre, but it also applies
broadly to school theatre, community theatre, and theatre beyond
Canada's borders.
Fundamentals of Directing
is a distillation of Ric Knowles'
twenty-five years of experience as a director, teacher of directing,
and dramaturge across Canada. Organized to reproduce the chronology
of a play's rehearsal, the book moves through the various stages of
the directorial process, from selecting a project through
auditioning; working with designers, actors, and technicians; to
coordinating the work of the full company through tech week to
closing night.
It also, and uniquely, includes
important appendices on the work of directors in devised theatre and
new-play development.
About the Author:
Ric Knowles is Professor
Emeritus of Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, Ontario,
Canada. He works as a professional dramaturg and director as well as
a researcher who has contributed substantively to Canadian theatre
criticism and production. He is an expert on the production of
Shakespeare, on contemporary theories of theatre production and
performance, and intercultural theatre. He is the author of
Fundamentals of Directing.
