About the Play:
Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical
Fun Home is a full-length musical drama with book and
lyrics by Lisa Kron and music by Jeanine Tesori. After
her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to tell
the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose
temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. A musical based on the acclaimed autobiographical graphic novel by
Alison Bechdel.
Fun Home is a poignant musical adaptation of a graphic
memoir by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, exploring sexual identity amid
complicated family constraints and relationships. It depicts Alison as a child, adolescent, and adult, charting her
process of coming out and her troubled relationship with her father. Alison's father was
many things: a historical preservationist, a funeral home director, a
distant parent, and… a closeted gay man. In the struggle to
understand her father Alison finds herself unable to move forward
without looking back. Moving between past and present, Alison relives
memories of her unique childhood playing at the family's Bechdel
Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the
looming, unanswerable questions about her father's hidden desires and
sudden death. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly
original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.
Fun Home premiered in 2012 off-Broadway at The Public Theater in New York City to positive reviews. It opened on Broadway in 2015 at the Circle in the Square Theatre and was awarded the Tony Award for Best Musical. The play enjoyed widespread acceptance among leading regional theatres, and has been mounted by colleges and community theaters.
