About
the Play:
Going To A Place Where You Already Are is a full-length
dramatic comedy by Bekah Brunstetter. A fun-loving couple are
avowed atheists in their golden years, moving along nicely until she
undergoes a serious medical diagnosis. Going To A Place Where You
Already Are is an insightfully compassionate play about a senior
couple navigating the land mines of their advancing years in a
delightfully carefree manner, until life catches up and demands some
big decisions about faith.
Going To A Place Where You Already Are is a poignant tale
touching on topics of love, religion, and the afterlife. Is there a
heaven? Joe says no; it's all a bunch of hokum. His wife, Roberta,
has always claimed to agree. But lately she's beginning to wonder,
especially when they find themselves in church a lot, having reached
the age when funerals are more frequent than weddings. Their
granddaughter, Ellie, doesn't have time in her own busy life to
ponder the after-life. But when mortality confronts them, her
grandmother's claim to have gone to heaven and back doesn't sound so
crazy after all. With thoughtful storytelling and quiet wit, Bekah
Brunstetter looks at beginnings, endings – and an enigmatic
angel.
Going To A Place Where You Already Are premiered in 2016 at
South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa. The
play has been performed in regional and
community theatre
productions.
