About
the Play:
The Great God Pan has become a favourite of acting teachers for Male Monologues, Female/Female Scenes, and Female/Male Scenes.
The Great God Pan is a full-length drama by Amy Herzog.
The play centers on an encounter between two childhood friends who
have not seen each other for over 25 years. When one reveals a hidden
secret from the past, the well-ordered world of the other begins to
unravel and his life will never be the same again.
The Great God Pan is a complex study of the ways in which a
tragic event affects our lives and the lives of those around us.
Jamie's life in Brooklyn seems just fine: a beautiful girlfriend, a
budding journalism career, and parents who live just far enough away.
But when a possible childhood trauma comes to light, lives are thrown
into a tailspin. Evocative, discerning, and unswervingly sincere, The
Great God Pan explores the questions of what is lost and what is
won when we are exposed to potentially life-changing truths.
The Great God Pan premiered in
2012 at Playwrights Horizons Mainstage Theater Off-Broadway in New York City. Since
then the play has been successfully staged at several professional
theatres across North
America. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and has
been mounted by high schools, colleges, and community theatres.

Whatever the ideal contemporary drama is, it has to look a lot like
The Great God Pan." — The New York
Observer

of alternate possibilities, [Herzog] has packed a set of big,
beautiful, perpetually troubling questions, moral and philosophical.
The work is tiny, but it runs deep." — Village Voice

deepest, most mature writing to date. How many playwrights display
this kind of economy and strength?" — Entertainment
