About
the Play:
Winner of the 2001 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play
I, Claudia is a full-length drama by Kristen Thomson.
Awkward Claudia is a precocious, intelligent twelve-year old
struggling to come to terms with with her parent's divorce and her
impending leap into teendom. I, Claudia is a unique solo
play that explores the emotional turbulence of interrupted family
life, and does so with abundant humour.
I, Claudia is a touching and funny play about a girl on the
cusp of adolescence. Claudia is an official pre-teen, still reeling
from her parents' divorce. Her father is getting re-married, she has
a science fair project due, and she is in the physical and emotional
throes of puberty. Finding refuge in the basement of her school,
Claudia discovers the pain at the centre of her brimming heart. It is
up to some important adults in her life – her grandmother, her
father's new girlfriend, the school custodian – to shed some light
on her situation.
I, Claudia premiered in 2001 at the Tarragon Theatre in
Toronto, winning awards for performance and writing. It was
subsequently performed across Canada and received glowing reviews at
the Edinburgh Festival. Particularly suitable for
schools and play contests.
Cast: 1 female plays all of the roles, using masks to change
