About the Play:

I'll Be Back Before Midnight is a full-length comedic psychological thriller by Peter Colley. A couple rents an old farmhouse with the hope that the peace and quiet will help the wife recover from a nervous breakdown, but the old owner tells them tales of murder and ghosts. It has now been performed in more than 30 countries and was named in a Globe & Mail retrospective on Canadian theatre as "the most produced Canadian play ever."

I'll Be Back Before Midnight concerns a long-married couple who've rented a remote farmhouse with the hope it would further wife Jan's recovery from a recent nervous breakdown. Jan doesn't much like the plan but goes along as she seeks to rekindle the romance in her marriage. Little comfort is provided by eccentric neighbour George, who recounts macabre tales of murders and ghosts associated with the house. Then a visit from Greg's strange sister Laura further puts Jan on edge. Bizarre and deceptive familial relationships are the fuel that slowly ignites into a conflagration of terrifying action as the play moves to a climax. What happens to fragile Jan as bodies appear and disappear give this classic thriller its tremendously frightening impact. As the body count rises and true motivations are finally revealed, will virtue prevail? I'll Be Back Before Midnight is a thriller in the Alfred Hitchcock mode, with nods to Gaslight, Agatha Christie, and Wait Until Dark.

I'll Be Back Before Midnight premiered in 1979 at the Blyth Festival Theatre (one of Canada's most widely-praised producers of new plays). It also has the distinction of having been produced in 48 of the 50 US states, every province in Canada and 29 countries around the globe including Mexico, Italy, China, Kenya, Spain, Ireland, Jamaica and Australia. It has broken numerous box office records and has had two record-breaking United Kingdom national tours.

What people say:

"Wonderfully spooky... somewhere between an Agatha Christie mystery and a Hitchcock thriller. Peter Colley sends up the haunted house bit with witty dialogue and at the next moment interrupts the audiences laughter with a good, heartthumping scare... a really good ghost story." — The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

"If you like spooky ghost thrillers with lots of creepy sound and visual effects, Peter Colley's I'll Be Back Before Midnight is an old-fashioned treat. Think of Deathtrap, Sleuth and others in that genre, and it's a pretty darn good match with enough plot twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat." —

"No amount of praise seems excessive, you'll either be shivering in your seat or rolling out of it with laughter." — New York Theatre Voice

"More spine tingling than Deathtrap. My ears still ring form the screams of the girls behind me." — The Sun (Toronto)

"A roller-coaster play with the kind of stomach-dropping twists that will make you hoot with laughter even as you clutch your theater companion's sleeve." — Los Angeles Times

"It's a first rate thriller...." — London Free Press

"This suspense filled play is likely to be the season's most entertaining production." — London Gazette
