About the
Play:
In a Blue Moon is
full-length drama by Lucia Frangione.
After her dad dies,
six-year-old Frankie and her mom move to a cottage where they meet
Uncle Will. Over time, a tender and unlikely love story emerges as
the three discover a new understanding of family. With strong writing and characters, In a Blue Moon is a complex, authentic story about three people learning how to live with each other after such a profound loss.
In a Blue Moon is a
visually beautiful tale about creating a new life in a new landscape.
When Frankie's dad dies, her mom, Ava, can't afford to live in the
city anymore. But the only asset they're left with is a farmhouse
situated on 20 acres of land far outside of town. Ava decides to move
there and start an Ayurveda clinic on the property, and at the same
time give her precocious and grieving daughter a new start. One
problem presents itself, though: a squatter who won't leave. Will –
a professional photographer, long-estranged brother-in-law to Ava,
and uncle to Frankie – lives rent-free on the farm and isn't eager
to give up his space. What starts as a tense relationship develops in
unexpected ways as Frankie finds a role model in her uncle and Ava
grows attached to the companionship of this other man. In a Blue
Moon combines memory, dance, photography, and heartfelt emotion
to examine three characters who each grieve in quite different ways.
Along the way they discover love, compassion, and companionship as
each member of the trio finds peace in their new reality, in their
own way.
Blue Moon premiered with The Arts Club Theatre in
Vancouver in 2015 and then toured in
2016 to the Surrey Arts Centre, Western Canada Theatre Company in Kamloops, and then on to Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ontario.
