About the Play:
In a Dark, Dark House is a full-length drama by
Neil LaBute. On the
grounds of a private psychiatric facility, two brothers find
themselves brought face-to-face with each other's involvement in
their traumatic past. In a Dark, Dark House explores
the darker facets of human relationships and the covert, unwritten
bonds that tie families together.
In a Dark, Dark House tells the tale of sexual and
emotional abuse and two brothers who attempt to overcome it.
Two brothers meet on the grounds of a private psychiatric facility.
Drew, has been court-confined for observation and has called his
older brother, Terry, to corroborate his claim of childhood sexual
abuse by a young man from many summers ago. Drew's request releases
barely-hidden animosities between the two: Is he using these
repressed memories to save himself while smearing the name of his
brother's friend? Through pain and acknowledged betrayal, the
brothers come to grips with and begin to understand the legacy of
abuse, both inside and outside their dark family home. Adapted from
his short story, Swallowing Bicycles, the playwright has called this
powerful piece his most personal.
In a Dark, Dark House premiered in 2007 Lucille
Lortel Theater off-Broadway in New York City. The play opened at
London's Almeida Theatre a year later and Neil LaBute created
a substantially different version of the play for the London
production. Larry Moss directed this revised version for the
Los Angeles premiere in 2014 at the Matrix Theatre in Hollywood.

What people say:
"There is no playwright on
the planet these days who is writing better than Neil
LaBute." — The New Yorker
"The most legitimately
provocative and polarizing playwright at work today."—
New York Magazine
"[LaBute's] view of modern
men and women is unsparing… [He] is holding up a pitiless mirror to
ourselves. We may not like what we see, but we can't deny that – if
only in some dark corner of our souls – it is there." —
The Journal News (White Plains, New York)
"Like a chiropractor of the
soul, LaBute is looking for realignment, listening for a crack."
— Elle
