About the Play:

Winner of the 2002 Governor General's Award for French Drama (Canadian equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize)

In the Eyes of Stone Dogs (English version of Le langue-à-langue des chiens de roche) is a full-length drama by Daniel Danis translated by Linda Gaboriau. An homage to Aeschylus, the "father of tragedy," the play is a love story set on an imaginary island in the St. Lawrence River.

In the Eyes of Stone Dogs is an epic story of exodus and salvation, a bloody Greek tragedy transplanted to the boreal forest. The eccentric islanders are about to join in the outdoor "Rages" staged by the trickster Coyote-wild Bacchanalia where the participants, under the influence of his potions, abandon themselves to the elemental forces of life and death. Under the ever-present eyes of a chorus of dogs, the play opens with Djoukie. Determined to escape this "real junk pile for a bunch of mental cases," who wants only to discover the mystery of her paternity before she escapes.

In the Eyes of Stone Dogs premiered in 2005 at the National Art Centre in Ottawa.

Cast: 4 female, 5 male

What people say:

"In the Eyes of Stone Dogs is a haunting play in which the line between myth and everyday reality is rendered powerfully indistinct, in which each generation, each moment, holds within it the opportunity to redefine what it means to be human." — Canadian Literature

"Strange, haunting and unforgettable." — Stage Directions
