About
the Play:
I Used to Write on Walls is a full-length comedic drama by
Bekah Brunstetter. Love hurts, as the song goes, and in I
Used to Write on Walls, the lives of three modern women are
upended by the presence of a sexy but clueless charmer. Hearts will
be broken, loves will be lost, and youthful cries of hope, anger, and
sadness will be written on walls.
I Used to Write on Walls is an "anti-romantic comedy"
about losing oneself in romance. Diane, Georgia, and Joanne are three
modern women living very different lives. Tough-talking lady cop
Diane is looking for love. Spoken word performer Georgia just wants
to be heard and Joanne is a clinging cosmetician making the world
more beautiful one makeover at a time. Unbeknownst to them, they are
all pining after the same young man, Trevor: a sexy, stoned surfer
with delusions of religious grandeur. When Trevor's beautiful
11-year-old cousin, Anna, and Mona (a sexy, widowed astronaut) are
thrown into the mix, Trevor finds himself in more trouble than he can
handle. Bekah Brunstetter, the Emmy Award-winning
writer/producer of the hit TV series This is Us, asks, "when
all we crave is love, how far will we go to cover up the truth that
is so clearly written on the walls?" Mothers will try to guide
their daughters from the promise and beauty of youth through the
diminishing opportunities of aging. Daughters will go to the extremes
of passion for holding on to their fantasies of love. One man will be
in the middle of a romantic storm of graffiti, drugs, sexual
asphyxiation, gunshots, explosions, and desire. And everyone will try
to prove that they are that chosen, special someone – destined for
true love and greatness.
I Used to Write on Walls premiered in 2008 at The Gene
Frankel Theatre off-off Broadway in New York City. The
play has been staged in regional theatres and performed in college
theatres as a showcase of student talent.
