About the Play:

Jar the Floor has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female Monologues and Female/Female Scenes.

Jar the Floor is a full-length drama by Cheryl L. West. Four generations of African-American women gather to celebrate the family's great grandmother's 90th birthday. Family secrets and old wounds between the various mothers and daughters are uncovered when the youngest member of the family arrives with an unexpected guest.

Jar the Floor is about the battles between generations, mothers and daughters, black and white and the ties that bind family together in despite of it all. A quartet of black women spanning four generations makes up this heartwarming dramatic comedy. The four, plus the white woman friend of the youngest, come together to celebrate their beloved, outrageous matriarch's 90th birthday. It's a wild party, one that is a lovable lunatic glance at the exhilarating challenge of growing old amidst the exasperating trials of growing up.

Jar the Floor was originally produced in 1989 by Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. The professional premiere was in 1991 at the Empty Space Theatre in Seattle, Washington and it was produced off-Broadway in New York by the Second Stage Theatre in 1999. The play has become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and is regularly performed in regional, college, and community theatre productions.
