About
the Play:
John Lennon & Me is a full-length comedic drama by
Cherie Bennett, adapted by the author from her popular book,
Good-bye, Best Friend. The action is set in a hospital annex
for seriously ill young people and is centered on a patient who gets a
naive roommate who hates really sick kids. The two learn to accept
each other. The winner of many national awards, John Lennon &
Me is an uproarious play about life, death, power and first
boyfriends.
John Lennon & Me is about a terminally ill young girl
who is in a hospital for sick kids. Star, a passionate Beatles fan
and Hollywood-wannabe, is creating the best life she can while
battling cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease that assures a young
death. She spends most of her time in the hospital, where she
confronts fate with imagination and a hopeful spirit. When given a
new roommate, Star welcomes Courtney – her exact opposite – a
pretty cheerleader who seems quite healthy and is extremely
uncomfortable with her new surroundings. However, Star is torn between
seeking the friendship she craves and staying true to herself.
Neither girl knows much about the other's world, but eventually they
come to understand each other and, ultimately, find strength in their
differences. John Lennon & Me deals with complex topics in
an open, honest, and heartfelt way. It explores the emotions
surrounding new friendships and first kisses, as well as the tough
realities of disease. This is a powerful play about living life to
the fullest.
John Lennon & Me premiered in 1993 at the Shalom
Theatre in the Gordon Jewish Community Center in Nashville,
Tennessee. This is a proven hit for school, adult, and TYA theatres
alike.

is a great play for high school performers because they can relate
to the young characters and the universal themes of friendship,
