About the Play:

Kiss The Moon, Kiss The Sun is a full-length drama by Norm Foster. Having survived a near-drowning experience as a child, Robert is physically forty-five but mentally will forever remain seven years old. His aging mother Claire must confront her own mortality and face the heart-breaking question of what will happen to her challenged son when she passes on. When Robert meets Holly at a bus stop one morning the two of them set off on a journey of self-discovery. Norm Foster uses his knack for creating winning characters and situations to give your audience a warm and humourous look at real people facing real problems.

Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun is a tale of friendship in uncertain times, and a reminder that sometimes, goodbye is just the beginning. This is an emotionally-charged play that explores the relationship between a 35 year old man with the mental capacity of a 7 year old, Robert, and a young pregnant woman in crisis, Holly. Robert lives with his widowed mother and works at a print shop doing odd jobs. His relationship with his mother Claire is at the core of the story, and it's obvious that "Mom" is the centre of his universe, the fountain of all knowledge, the rock. Claire's health is not the best and after a visit with her Doctor, she realizes that she has to find someone to care for Robert after she's gone. Robert meets Holly at the bus stop. The illness of Robert's mother and the reappearance of Holly's boyfriend Simon seem to present insurmountable problems. It seems unlikely that anything can come of this chance encounter, but isn't life like that? Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun is a story about people finding the nerve to take responsibility and about persevering against all odds. Foster at his finest as he emulates real life with a constant tug-of-war between humour and pathos. Peppered with laughter and tears, this feel-good story is an uplifting and poignant reminder that "family" can be found in the most unexpected places.

Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun premiered in 2001 at Theatre Orangeville in Orangeville, Ontario. Since then the play has been mounted by regional and community theatres across North America.

What people say:

"A masterpiece!" — Orangeville Citizen

"Foster builds his plays on the complex dynamic of human relationships and Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun is no exception. What makes this comedy unique in the burgeoning Foster canon is the extent to which the playwright wears his heart on his sleeve. In our age of ironic detachment, this is a considerable risk. Foster is right when he describes this comedy as Forrest Gump Meets Educating Rita." — The Kitchener Record

"This is one of the best plays – if not the best – I have ever seen in 30 years as a reporter." — Kamloops This Week
