Winner of the 1999 Herman Voaden National Playwriting Competition
Last Romantics is a full-length comic drama by Michael
Lewis MacLennan. The play chronicles the staggering triumphs and
losses of the now-forgotten brilliant artistic duo Charles Ricketts
and Charles Shannon, to create a vivid portrait of a world left
behind by the dawning of the modern age.
Last Romantics is a fictionalized portrait of the 50-year
relationship between painter Charles Shannon and art collector
Charles Ricketts, who influenced the early collection of the National
Gallery. Last Romantics travels from the drawing rooms of the
fin-de-siecle London, with Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley to
Mackenzie King's Canada on the eve of the Great Depression.
Last Romantics premiered in 2003 at National Arts Centre in
Ottawa.
