About
the Play:
The Man From Earth is a full-length sci-fi drama adapted
for the stage by Richard Schenkman from
the final screenplay by the legendary science-fiction author Jerome
Bixby. When a professor
mysteriously bids farewell to his colleagues, he confesses he's an
immortal who has walked the Earth for 14,000 years. This revelation
challenges his friends' fundamental beliefs and assumptions.
If his
story is true, what would he have seen, what amazing historical
truths would he know and are there others like him?
The Man From Earth centers
history professor John Oldman unexpectedly resigns from his
teaching position at the University. His startled colleagues
impulsively invite themselves to his home, pressing him for an
explanation. But they're shocked to hear his reason for premature
retirement: John claims he must move on because he is immortal, and
cannot stay in one place for more than ten years without his secret
being discovered. Tempers rise and emotions flow as John's fellow
professors attempt to poke holes in his story, but it soon becomes
clear that his tale is as impossible to disprove as it is to verify.
If John Oldman's story is true,
what would he have seen, what amazing historical truths would he know
and are there others like him? What starts out as a friendly
gathering soon builds to an unexpected and shattering climax. The
Man From Earth is science fiction writing at its very best,
exploring the what if's and the unknowns of human life and history.
Acclaimed science fiction writer Jerome Bixby originally
conceived The Man From Earth back in the early 1960's. It
would come to be his last great work. This stage adaptation
by Richard Schenkman
has been performed
in regional repertory, high school, college, and community theatre
productions
Cast: 3 female, 6 male
