About the Play:

Meet My Husbands is a full-length comedy by Fred Carmichael. A hilarious foray into the world of advertising. When an ad executive, with a rocky marriage, tries to find a suitable "spouse" to introduce to a client who admires family values, she finds her self in a bit of a sticky situation.

Meet My Husbands deals with mistaken identities. Chicago advertising executive Elaine Scott is in sunny Florida to meet the Mulgrews, potential European clients. With her job on the line, Elaine is hoping to put through a huge deal with Anthony Mulgrew. With his wife Janis, he has flown from London to meet secretly with Elaine and her assistant Frances Wharton. Anthony insists that the ad campaign for his company's prized product and all those connected with it must reflect wholesome family values, but Elaine's marriage to a second-rate actor is heading for divorce court. In desperation, the newly-separated Elaine hires a beach bum, Tim Billings, to pose as her husband. Elaine just has time to explain her ploy to her assistant Fran and Fran's husband, Michael, before Anthony walks in and sees Michael emerging from Elaine's bedroom and assumes he's Elaine's husband. That's just the beginning of the complications, which are only made worse by a muckraking gossip columnist and a nosy hotel maid. With mix-ups and unexpected arrivals (including her estranged husband), Elaine finds herself with more husbands than she counted on. The balcony between suites becomes a comic causeway with the ad campaign hanging in the balance. Who is Tim Billings? Why is that newspaper woman prying about? Why has Elaine's opportunistic husband appeared on the scene? And will the sales pitch succeed? A multiple surprise ending caps this hilarious foray into the world of advertising.

Meet My Husbands is a play of misunderstandings and entanglements that has become a popular choice for community theatre productions.

About the Playwright:

Fred Carmichael (1924-2009) was a prolific American playwright and actor. After years of touring and summer stock theatre, he and his director wife decided to have their own theatre and moved to Dorset, Vermont in 1949 and began a long running relationship with the Dorset Players until 1976, producing a full season of summer theatre. From the early 1950s through the mid-1990s, he wrote over 50 comedies and murder-mystery comedies many of which premiered at the Dorset Playhouse. It was once said about his plays that "Fred Carmichael is a deft plotter – crucial to the mystery form – but his light touch turns standard whodunits into comedic soufflés."
