About the Play:
Finalist for the Governor General's Award (Canadian equivalent of
the Pulitzer Prize) for Drama.
Miracle Mother is a full-length comedy by Deborah
Kimmett. What happens when a professional woman finds out she's
pregnant and delivers a little girl only six months into her
pregnancy? For anyone who has ever experienced the birth of a child,
Miracle Mother ripples with the laughter of recognition.
Miracle Mother is a touching comedy about premature birth
and neonatal care featuring Nora McLellan as a harried career woman
whose life is thrown into chaos by the birth of a dangerously
premature daughter. As Kathleen struggles to bond with this infant,
she is forced to sort out her relationships with her mother and
husband. And as a lapsed Catholic giving birth in a Catholic
hospital, she must also redefine her sense of faith. The reality of
giving birth to a one lb. 15-ounce baby is at the centre of the play,
but Miracle Mother is also a heartfelt and wickedly funny look
at the entire birth experience, especially as reflected in the
mother-daughter relationship.
Miracle Mother premiered in 1993 at the Tarragon Theatre in
Toronto, and was staged in 1994 at the Arts Club in Vancouver and in
1995 at Alberta Theatre Projects in Calgary.
