About
the Play:
Morning's At Seven is a full-length comedy by Paul
Osborn. Four sisters who live near each other in a Midwestern
suburb find their lives are thrown into turmoil when two of them
begin to question their lives and decide to make some changes before
it's too late. Paul Osborn's treasured comedy classic about
small town life, Morning's At Seven has proven its timeless
appeal and popularity.
Morning's at Seven concerns the doings of four Gibbs
sisters, all well over 50 years old, who live practically together in
a small town. Aaronetta and Ida Gibbs have lived next door to each
other most of their lives and along with Esther, all of the Gibb
sisters are an open book to each. Husbands not included. Into the
fray comes Myrtle Brown, perpetually engaged to Ida's 40-year-old
son, Homer. But Homer can't seem to pop the question. Taking matters
into her own hands, Myrtle finally gets a proposal by compelling
Homer to fly the nest. Sort of. Hailed as "one of the best
American comedies," Morning's At Seven is a humorous look
at the eccentricities, regrets, and longings that underlie the lives
of ordinary people.
Paul Osborn received a Tony award for best Broadway revival
in 1980 for his bittersweet and evergreen comedy, Morning's at
Seven, which originally opened in 1939 at the Longacre Theatre on
Broadway in New York City. A 2002 revival went on to be nominated for
two more Tony Award nominations than the previous revival. Over the
decades since it was written, this under-appreciated gem of the
American theatre has become
a popular choice for regional, community, and summer
stock theatre productions.
