About
the Play:
Murder at the Howard Johnson's has long been a favourite of acting teachers for Female/Female Scenes, Female/Male Scenes, and Three-Person Scenes.
Murder at the Howard Johnson's is a full-length comedy by
Ron Clark and Sam Bobrick. Three people with murderous
intent occupy three rooms in a Howard Johnson's motel. All is fair in
love? Even murder? That's the question posed as this madcap love
triangle plots three different murders. Only problem is, they're no good at it. Their bungled attempts will keep your audience in stitches!
Murder at the Howard Johnson's unleashes an hilarious set
of events that span three different nights at the same hotel room as
a volatile love-triangle goes awry. Arlene is bored with her husband Paul, who is dull
and petty but adores her. Paul is embittered
after a lifetime of disappointment. Their dentist Mitchell
inexplicably fancies himself an irresistible ladies' man. In the
first act, Mitchell and Arlene have checked in at Christmas time and
together they lure Paul to the Howard Johnson's in an attempt to
murder him. That plan goes so awry that by the second act, on the
Fourth of July, having discovered that Mitchell has been having an
affair with another woman, Arlene allies herself with Paul to do away
with Mitchell in the same hotel room. In the third act, on New Year's
Eve, the two men, feeling foolish and betrayed themselves, team up
and try to "off" Arlene. There's no telling who will end up
dead or who will end up with who…
Murder at the Howard Johnson's premiered in 1979 at the
Golden Theater on Broadway in New York City. The play has become a
favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and workshops and has since gone on to be a community theatrical staple, constantly
performed worldwide.
