About the Play:

Murder on the Rerun is a full-length murder-mystery comedy by Fred Carmichael. An Oscar winning screenwriter is bumped off. Was it her philandering husband, his starlet mistress, the great film director, a fading leading lady, or a famous gossip columnist who did the deed? While taking the audience through the journey of discovering the killer, Murder on the Rerun also shines a light on celebrity culture.

Murder on the Rerun is a witty, sophisticated, yet suspenseful look at the upper crust of Hollywood. It opens as Jane, an Oscar winning screen writer, dies after falling down the stairs during a gathering at a Vermont ski lodge. Her four friends and husband are saying she fell. But we soon discover that Jane believes that she was murdered. "I was pushed!" she says as her ghost rises from the floor to address the audience. She is in limbo on her way to heaven as she tries to find her killer. Aided by Kitty, an ambitious trainee angel who wants to earn her wings, a ghostly Jane is brought ahead to the present, three years after the murder, where the five prime suspects are gathered. They are all famous film makers with their own ambitions and jealousies; Jane's husband who quickly married a mercenary young starlet, a leading lady past her prime but refusing to accept it, a full-of-himself film director, and Hollywood's reigning gossip columnist. They join together to keep the possible murder quiet for reasons of their own as Jane stalks her "dear friends" while hearing first-hand about their post-mortem duplicities. But the suspects relationship busts apart with their mutual distrust as we learn who gave Jane that final, fatal push down the stairs – and why. For the unusual and audience pleasing combination of comedy, intrigue, and suspense, Murder on the Rerun is a must!

Murder on the Rerun premiered in 1985 at the Dorset Playhouse in Dorset, Vermont. It has become a popular choice for high school and community theatre productions. All the roles are lengthy with well defined characters.

Cast: 5 female, 2 male
