About
the Play:
Next Fall has long been a favourite of acting teachers for
Female Monologues and Male Monologues.
Next Fall is a full-length comedic drama by Geoffrey
Nauffts. In this Tony-nominated play, Adam and Luke are long-term
partners with very different views on salvation. But when Luke is
hospitalized in a tragic accident, Adam must come face-to-face with
Luke's faith and his family. Next Fall takes a witty and
provocative look at faith, commitment and unconditional love.
Next Fall is about a gay couple in conflict over the
religious convictions of one of the partners. The play's central
story depicts the five-year relationship between older partner Adam,
a neurotic confirmed atheist, and Luke, a partially closeted,
impulsive and devoutly Christian actor. When a serious accident
leaves Luke in a coma, family and friends descend on the couple, and
their different backgrounds spark tension, and Adam must reassess his
views and seek support from an unexpected source. The play presents
the couple's relationship in flashbacks as it developed leading up to
the day of the accident. Next Fall is a compelling play that
forces us all to examine what it means to "believe" and
what it might cost us not to.
Next Fall premiered in 2009 at the Peter Jay Sharp
Theatre Off-Broadway and transferred to the Helen Hayes Theatre
on Broadway. The play has
become a favourite scene study vehicle in acting classes and
workshops and is regularly performed in regional and community
theatre productions.

What people say:
"The funniest heartbreaker in
town! Next Fall embodies something theatergoers
have been sorely missing, perhaps without knowing it, for years. A
smart, sensitive, immensely appealing and utterly contemporary New
York comedy." — New York Times
"Five Stars. The best new
American play of the Broadway season, Next Fall
leaves you thinking about rapture and rupture. If you go, which
you should, be prepared to laugh some, perhaps to cry some, and then
to rise in appreciation." — Time Out NY
"Compassionate, laugh-filled
and enormously entertaining. Geoffrey Nauffts
invests the play with a generosity that doesn't prejudge,
embracing both the virtues and foibles of his characters. And that
inclusion makes Next Fall an even richer
experience." — Associated Press
"A daring new drama." —
Entertainment Weekly
"Deeply moving and
surprisingly funny. Geoffrey Nauffts reveals a
talent for sharp comic dialogue. He draws all his characters with
surprising depth." — Hollywood Reporter
