About
the Play:
Nine is a full-length
musical drama by Maury Yeston,
Arthur Kopit, and
Mario Fratti. A
famous film director is suffering from a creative block – and
personal difficulties with his wife, mistress, the actress who serves
as his muse, and his female producer – in Maury Yeston,
Arthur Kopit, and
Mario Fratti's
musical adaptation of the Federico Fellini film "8 1/2."
Nine is an unconventional love story based on Italian film
director Federico Fellini's comedic masterpiece, "8 1/2."
The play examines the midlife crisis of film director Guido Contini
(who is based on the real life Federico Fellini) and his attempts to
come up with a plot for his next film. Guido's fortieth birthday
sends him into an emotional tailspin that threatens to destroy his
marriage and career. Guido brings his wife to Venice to save his
marriage and restore his artistic passion, but while there he is
pursued by hordes of beautiful women, all clamouring to be loved by
him and him alone, and falls back into a tangled web of romance and
deception. He is forced to examine his flawed relationships with the
many women he has loved. Eventually, Guido learns to act like an
adult, instead of a self-indulgent nine year old child. Flashbacks
reveal the substance of his life which will become the material for
his next film: a musical version of the Casanova story.
Nine
premiered in 1982 at the 46th Street Theatre on Broadway in New York
City, ran for ran for over 700
performances and won the Tony
Award for Best Musical. It was revived in
2003 at Eugene O'Neill Theatre and won the Tony Award for Best
Revival of a Musical. The
play has been performed
in regional, college, and community theatre productions.
