About the Play:

No Foreigners Beyond This Point is a full-length drama by Warren Leight. Inspired by the Tony-winning playwright's own real life experiences as a teacher in China, the play follows two young, idealistic Americans who become the first foreign instructors at a small, isolated trade school. Their students crave access to everything Western, but the school's bureaucrats are desperate to control that access. The Americans soon find themselves living where "the Beatles are as unknown as personal privacy."

No Foreigners Beyond This Point focuses on Paula and Andrew, two twenty-something Americans, who arrive in China right after the Cultural Revolution, when the country is just starting to open up to foreigners. Paula has come to teach English and Andrew has come to spend a semester close to Paula. Their naiveté is astounding as they blunder into the heavily socialist and guarded community of the school. They are spied on by everyone, obliquely threatened, mystified by local customs, and generally fish out of water. Ultimately, Andrew returns to the States, but Paula decides to stay, despite her seeming distaste for their surroundings.

No Foreigners Beyond This Point premiered in 2002 at Baltimore Center Stage's Pearlstone Theatre. Its Off-Broadway debut was in 2005 the Ma-Yi Theater Company at the Culture Project, New York's home for socially conscious theatre, in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

What people say:

"No Foreigners Beyond This Point … makes the most of its possibilities both as a romantic exploit and as a perceptive vision of people who are as reluctant to express their true feelings, even as they are curious about those who do." — CurtainUp

"Warren Leight casts a fresh light on the conflict between East and West in No Foreigners Beyond This Point. This semi-autobiographical play takes audiences back to a time when, though the Berlin Wall had yet to fall, capitalism had managed to creep into the psyches of even diehard socialists." — BackStage
