About the Play:

Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii is a farce comedy by Allan Stratton. A writer of romance novels comes to spend an illicit weekend with a respectably married man and starts a chain of events which involves all the classic elements of farce.

Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii is an account of a romance novelist's love life going over the top. Vivien Bliss, a writer of Harlequin Romance novels, comes to spend a romantic weekend with respectably married school teacher Edgar Chisholm, while his wife is supposed to be away. However, things get strange when various characters come into the picture such as Edgar's wife Doris, her ex-boyfriend, the ex-wife of Edgar, lost children and a vengeful publicist. Confused identities, disguise, long lost relatives, ambushes, chases and glorious mayhem. How Vivien gets her new novel finished in the face of, behind the back of, in spite of and with the help of an advice columnist, a nosy reporter, a doctor in panty hose, an orphan with a cake and Helga the evil Russian physicist, is the story of this hilarious play.

Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii premiered in 1980 at the Phoenix Theatre in Toronto. Its American premiere was in 1982 by the Pennsylvania Stage Company in Allentown. Subsequently presented off-off-Broadway at Theatre-in-the-Park in the Queens borough of New York City in 1982. Revived to acclaim in 2002 at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. A repertory and community theatre staple, which has had over 300 productions throughout Canada and the US, it is one of the most popular Canadian plays ever written.

What people say:

"Nurse Jane Goes To Hawaii is wild, wacky, thoroughly implausible and thoroughly enjoyable. Few playwrights would have the nerve to juggle so many plots. Stratton dares greatly. The plot twists and turns like a maze with a dark secret around every corner. And like all good farce, there's a moving hint of the darker side of life at the end." — Toronto Star

"Howlingly funny ... sophisticated comedy and farce." — Newsday

"Feydeau-style dodging through diverse doors and Mack Sennett-like pastry in the puss ... Nurse Jane Goes To Hawaii is a sellout." — Variety

"Coincidence piles on coincidence with characters whirling in and out of enough doors to make Feydeau dizzy.... Excellent." — Backstage

"Hilarious." — New York Daily News
